After the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, Mumbai witnessed unprecedented riots and mob violence in December and January 1993. As the situation was returning to normalcy, the city was rocked by serial bomb blasts on March 12 1993—with 12 devices exploding between 1.30 pm and 3.40 pm.

The first bomb went off at the Bombay Stock Exchange and followed by other blasts at Katha Bazaar, Lucky Petrol Pump near Sena Bhavan in Dadar, opposite the passport office near Century Bazaar in Worli, fishermen’s colony in Mahim, Air India office building in Nariman Point, Zaveri Bazaar, Hotel Sea Rock, Bandra, Plaza Cinema in Dadar and Centaur Hotel in Juhu.

The explosions killed 257 people and 713 were injured, several of who have till recently undergone umpteen surgeries.

April 1993—Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt is arrested

November 4 1993—Over 10,000-page long primary chargesheet filed against 189 accused

November 19, 1993—Case handed over to CBI

April 19, 1995—First leg of trial begins

October 14, 1995—Dutt granted bail

October 2000—Examination of 684 prosecution witnesses ends

March 9-July 18, 2001—Accused record their statements

August 9, 2001-August 22 2002—prosecution and defence arguments take place

September 8, 2002—Abu Salem detained in Lisbon, Portugal

March 20, 2003—Mustafa Dossa arrested by CBI in Delhi airport on arrival from Dubai

September 2003—Main trial ends

November 11, 2005—Abu Salem extradited to India

June 13, 2006—Salem’s trial separated

September 12, 2006—TADA court judge P D Kode starts pronouncing judgement. Four members of Memon family found guilty.

12 convicts awarded death penalty, 20 given life imprisonment. Different sentences for others

Feb. 2007—Main trial concludes and second phase commences

March 16, 2013—Sanjay Dutt surrenders before court after Supreme Court upholds his conviction

March 21, 2013--Supreme Court upholds death sentence of convict Yakub Memon, brother of Tiger Memon

July 30, 2015—Key conspirator Yakub Memon hanged

December 7, 2015—Final arguments of second phase of trial begins

June 8 2016—Court rejects plea of accused Firoz Abdul Rashid when he said he wanted to become approver

March 2017—Trial concludes
