Hyderabad: After the shocking incident of a newborn dying after a rat attack in the government’s district hospital in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, administration on Friday suspended three officials and transferred two top officials, including the superintendent Venugopal and Peadiatrics surgeon Bhaskar Rao.

Minister for Medical and Health Kamineni Srinivas told media today that the government has taken the incident very seriously and ordered a thorough probe into the functioning of the centre.

The condition of the hospital came to light when rat catchers caught at least 100 vermin from the hospital including from its operation theatres.

The incident of rats attacking a ten-day-old baby in the neonatal intensive care unit of the government’s district hospital has triggered public anger and dismay.

After the overnight attack of the rats, which left the baby with serious wounds on his face, left eye and other parts of the body, the parents were shocked to find him bleeding on Tuesday morning.

The baby’s mother, Lakshmi, alleged that criminal negligence by the doctors and other staff members of the hospital caused the tragedy. “They even failed to treat the baby even after the rat attack”, she said, crying inconsolably.

Later, the administration hired the services of a team of rat catchers from the East Godavari district.
