Dhaka: Entry into politics seems to have taken its toll on the conjugal life of famous Bangladeshi actress Kabari Sarwar whose 30-year relationship with husband Shafiuddin has come to an end.

Kabari has been nominated by Awami League to contest the upcoming parliamentary polls from the suburban constituency of Narayanganj. Awami League is led by former bangladesh premier Shaikh Hasina.

Kabari, the winner of a number of national and international awards, married to Shafiuddin in 1978, after divorcing her first husband Chitta Chowdhury.

"The reason [behind the divorce] is that I've got the Awami League nomination," the 62-year old popular actress told newsmen late on Wednesday after securing her nomination.

Kabari said her husband, Shafiuddin, alias Babu, had cited "lack of understanding" for severing the nuptial knot.

Awami League announced the name of Kabari as the party candidate for the upcoming polls from the Narayanganj constituency in preference to former lawmaker Shamim Osman, who is the nephew of Kabari's husband. Osman is now on the run to evade arrest. He is wanted by the police in Bangladesh for his involvement in a number of graft and criminal cases.

"Actually, it's part of a plot. He [Shafiuddin] divorced me at the instigation from certain quarters, since I got the nomination," Kabari said.
