Coalition forces kill around 45 Taliban insurgents during a clash in southern Afghanistan, says a US military spokesman.

The forces clashed with a group of around 10 Taliban in the Panjwai district of Kandahar province, in southern Afghanistan.

Taliban insurgents joined other reinforcements in a nearby compound, while retreating from the area said a US military spokesman.

"Afghan and coalition forces pressed the attack with joint fires and a ground assault, killing an estimated 45 extremists in the firefight," he added.

Two coalition forces were killed in the attack and another injured.

Reports say that the total death toll of rebels killed over the past four days is near to 150.

"Operation Mountain Thrust" is a major offensive launched by the US military to curtail insurgent attacks in southern Afghanistan, which has been on the increase in recent weeks, before NATO takes control of the unstable region from the USA.
