Dubai: An investigation is underway in Serbia after US combat missiles were reportedly found on an Air Serbia passenger flight at Belgrade airport over the weekend.

The two guided armour piercing missiles, armed with explosives warheads, were discovered by sniffer dogs after the Air Serbia aircraft had landed from Beirut, Lebanon on Saturday, AP reported on Sunday quoting Serbia’s N1 television.

"We can confirm that a cargo consignment, being carried to an onward destination, was intercepted at Belgrade Airport [on Saturday] as a result of stringent security screening measures. The airline is assisting with the investigation. Safety and security is Air Serbia's number one priority,” an Air Serbia spokesperson told Gulf News by email late on Sunday.

The AGM-114 Hellfire missiles were bound for an address in Portland Oregon, AP reported quoting Serbian media. The American-made missiles can be fired from the air, at sea and on land.

Air Serbia is the national flag carrier of Serbia. Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways owns a 49 per cent stake in the airline and has management control until 2018.
