Los Angeles: Part of the busy Los Angeles International Airport was closed late on Sunday due to unconfirmed reports of gunfire, airport officials said on Twitter.

Police later said that no shots were fired and that no gunman was found at Los Angeles airport. Reports of possible gunfire came from very loud noises, police added.

Earlier on Sunday, airport police searched the site after the reports, and urged passengers to "remain calm" in a Twitter message.

"All precautions being taken to ensure safety of public," airport police wrote.

The Los Angeles airport, known as LAX, is the seventh busiest airport worldwide in terms of traffic. Los Angeles itself is the second most populous city in the United States.
