Nairobi: A pride of eight lions made famous by the BBC’s “Big Cat Diary” have been poisoned in Kenya’s Maasai Mara game reserve and two of them, including a lioness named Bibi, have died.

Another unidentified carcass was presumed to be that of Sienna, an adult female. The rest of the Marsh pride was treated and has recovered, according to Paul Udoto, a spokesman for the Kenya Wildlife Services.

“Two suspects have been remanded for 14 days to facilitate investigations,” Udoto said.

Kenya has an estimated 2,000 lions and most deaths are from poisoning or spearing by people living around game parks in retaliation for livestock killed by the cats, he said.
