Nairobi: Kenya's continued political instability could spark further violence, warns international think tank, International Crisis Group (ICG), stressing that legal, electoral and constitutional reforms are needed in order to curb the situation.

Both opposition and government sides are mobilizing armed groups for fresh attacks, the report continued. It made 12 recommendations to facilitate peace, including sanctions for instigators of inter-ethnic violence.

"The current uneasy calm in Kenya should not be misunderstood as a return to normalcy," added the report.

Kenya's opposition has threatened to relaunch mass protests within a week if the political crisis continues.

A minimum 1,000 people have lost their lives due to this turmoil. Hundreds of thousands have also lost their homes.
