Dubai: An amateur video uploaded on Sunday shows the horrifying aftermath of the crash of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 minutes after it was shot down in eastern Ukraine.

The clip, uploaded by the Associated Press, shows what is purported to be the smoldering wreck of the Boeing 777 200ER after it went down in a rebel-held town near the Russian border.

Thick black plumes of smoke billowed out of the wreckage spread over a wide swathe of a flatland in rural Ukraine, and showed residents in their ordinary clothing running towards the site.

The amateur footage, uploaded to Youtube on Sunday, had instantly become viral. It shows residents trying to douse the massive fire with small buckets of water.

Aircraft debris that fell near the home of locals, apparently from the aircraft, were also shown in the video, which lasted about 2 minutes.

MH17 crashed near Torez in Donetsk Oblast about 40km from the Ukraine-Russian border. US and German intelligence sources say pro-Russian separatists shot down the aircraft using a Buk surface-to-air missile from a territory they control.
