DUBAI: Johnny, the cat whose picture went viral after he was rescued during the recent Dubai Marina Torch tower blaze, now has a drink named after him.

The cat’s owner, Melke Zedec, a general manger at the newly opened Mr Miyagis restaurant in Dubai Media City, introduced the drink – Johnny – in order to raise funds for the treatment of the cat following the incident.

Zedec wasn’t at home when the fire broke out on the night of August 3. He said he had lost all hope of seeing his pet again when he saw huge flames on the Torch tower from his work place in Media City.

“The next morning when I went to my buiding the security guards told me Johnny was alive. Soon after, a friend sent me a picture from Dubai Media Centre’s twitter page. I cannot express how happy I was at that moment,” recalled the Brazilian expatriate whose flat is on the 68th floor of the tower.

The six-month-old cat had inhaled smoke for over 10 hours and was rushed to Umm Suqeim Veterinary hospital by the authorities the same night.

“He had some bruises and was coughing constantly when I saw him,” said Melke, adding that the cat has now been discharged.

“I have to pay Dh5,800 for all the treatment and medication,” said Melke, who hopes to cover bill through the sale of the new drink.

Priced Dh60, Johnny is available at Mr Miyagis till August 13.
