Police detain school principal, teacher after a three-year-old girl dies in an elevator mishap
Hyderabad: A three-year-old baby died after getting stuck in a lift at her school in Hyderabad, Telangana, on Tuesday morning.
The deceased, Syeda Zainab Fatima Jafari, was a pupil of lower kinder garden at the Star Kid Premium School in Dilsukhnagar.
Police said the incident occurred when a teacher was accompanying a group of pulls from the ground floor to the third floor. The girl’s father works in Dubai.
As the shocking news spread, the parents of the pupils gathered at the school and demanded immediate action against the management. Police rushed to the scene to prevent any violence. Some of the staff members were taken into custody.
Deputy Commissioner of Police East Zone D Ravindra said a case was booked against the management of the school. “We have also called the district educational officer to check the school premises and find out whether the management had necessary permission from the government. We will take stern action against those responsible for the incident”, he said. He wondered how a nursery school was being run in a three storied building and had a lift without a lift operator.
The child’s mother Zaina Fatima was inconsolable. “This is nothing but murder”, she shouted. “I can’t believe this. We heard about it within minutes of dropping my daughter at the school”.
Wailing and screaming, the mother demanded justice. “The school people have shown criminal negligence. We want action”.
The girl’s father was rushing back to Hyderabad from Dubai where he works.
DCP Ravinder said school principle and three others were arrested and a case of death due to negligence has been booked against the school. “We will thoroughly investigate to establish the cause and fix the responsibility. Whosoever is responsible will face the action”, he said.
School tag with blood stains was a grim reminder of the tragedy in which the head of the Syeda was crashed after she was stuck in the grill door of the elevator.
Authorities have ordered the closure of the school until the probe is concluded.
