Dubai: A lecture on sexual abuse by a sergeant organised by Dubai Police uncovered an alleged sexual molestation case involving a cleaner at a school in Hatta.

A Bengali cleaner, who works at a school, was accused of sexually molesting more than six children aged between seven and fourteen in a school’s restrooms.

According to Public Prosecution papers stating the testimony of a sergeant, the sergeant gave a lecture on sexual abuse under the title “When to say no” to second graders. Three boys approached him at the time and told him that one of the cleaners always unlocked the bathroom door and molested each of them.

The 32-year-old suspect, H.A., denied the charges at the Dubai Criminal Court on Monday and asked for a judgement.

The sergeant, K.A., testified that when he informed the principal about the case, they decided to go to the restrooms to see if the doors could be unlocked from outside using a dirham coin, and it turned out to be possible.

K.A. transferred the issue to the police station in Hatta and came back with other policemen to question the three students and take their testimony. The three students told the officers that the cleaner did the same thing to other students too and that he would touch them indecently from behind after unlocking the bathroom door.

The suspect was arrested immediately by police. During questioning, he denied opening bathroom doors when children were inside, but confessed touching the children only to joke with them.

A school teacher testified that he was always suspicious about the same cleaner’s behaviour because in one incident he saw him standing behind children drinking water and in another caught him talking to three children after school.

The next hearing has been scheduled for September 22.
