“I am used to seeing people working, fasting and coming together in the evening to end their fast in Ramadan. But as a Christian, what I find beautiful about this holy month, is that other people are not disregarded. As non-Muslims, we are also invited to share in the iftar, and eat together with our Muslim friends.

“I have come to find this month to be about sharing, giving, seeking repentance and a time for contemplation.

“I don’t fast during Ramadan, but I am familiar with the concept of fasting or giving up something you desire, because in Christianity, we observe Lent. Because of my work requirements, I travel a lot, and so I find it a bit challenging in Ramadan, especially because you cannot eat or drink. The weather is harsh during the summer and that makes it more uncomfortable, but of course, I follow the rules out of respect for those who are fasting.

“Seeing people fasting during the month has changed my perception of Muslims ever since I came to the UAE. You hear a lot of negative stereotypes in the news. But when you see what Ramadan is about, you see the patience, tolerance and respect that is needed to fulfil the obligation of fasting.

“Over the years, I have started to participate, too. If I see people donating money or giving away food to the needy, I’m inspired to do it as well.

“I work in a multinational company, and as part of the company’s traditions, all employees get together and have iftar just before Eid. I like that Ramadan in the UAE is so inclusive. We feel part of a community. Often, I’ve seen the glow of people’s faces around the table during iftar. It’s the same glow you have when you strive for a goal and achieve it. I know that I feel it during Lent.

“I feel privileged to be a part of Ramadan in the UAE.”
