Dubai: Free WiFi in public areas is now a reality in many areas of UAE.

Telecom operator du on March 5 launched WiFi UAE, an initiative providing WiFi access in public areas for residents. The initiative is in keeping with a ‘Smart City’ project announced by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to provide residents with high-speed internet connection in public places and ‘live’ services and information.

The project will initially cover 100 prominent locations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The facility is expected to impact the quality of life in the UAE.

Downtown Dubai and parts of Dubai Silicon Oasis are already enjoying free Wifi. Users in Downtown Dubai get connectivity across the entire 3.5 km Mohammad Bin Rashid Boulevard stretch after developer Emaar and du joined hands to provide the service.

Last month, Dubai Silicon Oasis also launched free WiFi service at the DSOA headquarters, the Cedre Shopping Centre and the Semmer Villas community centre.

The WiFi was also extended to parking lots attached to these areas.

The second phase of the project is due for completion in the second quarter of this year.
