Abu Dhabi: Etisalat on Monday said it has launched an all new simplified approach to roaming prices for worldwide destinations based on zones with highly competitive and easy-to-understand pricing.

"Etisalat's revamped international roaming charges for outbound roamer are now unified and a flat rate will be applied according to the new roaming zones and new rates," the company said in a state.

This enhanced service means that etisalat's customers can benefit from unified rates when sending any SMS or receiving voice/video calls from anywhere; or making voice or video calls to local and UAE destinations, while abroad.

Customers will enjoy unified call rates across specific international zones, without any hidden additional tax or operator charges added to the call tariff. For easier reference and usage control, the roaming zones have been geographically categorised into 3 traveling destinations as logically observed. These are: Gulf Countries (GCC), Other Arab Countries and Rest of the World (ROW).

I travel quite often and use roaming facility. Earlier I use to think that Telecom is expensive here (only when you compare it with the rest of the World) but when it comes to Arab World and GCC, here rates are quite reasonable. Telecom in Rest of the World is cheap even then roaming charges for these areas are the most expensive. Couldn't understand the reason? May be the number of callers for ROW are 5 times more than the indigenous population.

One bitten, twice shy! Roamed once or twice on Etisalat and never again! Like a lot of UAE based consumers/business travelers, better value to buy a SIM locally abroad and use that but of course, would be more useful to have one number to track you everywhere. Etisalat can have my roaming revenue back when they provide the value that World Class Telco's provide! I think it would be useful for consumers to know the following:- How do these rates compare to other Telcos? How much have the roaming rates "improved"?
