Abu Dhabi: The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said on Monday it has finalised the submissions from interested companies for acquiring a licence for broadcast Mobile TV service in the country.

The submissions were finalised on December 31, 2008.

"Major names in telecom and media industries from the UAE and GCC countries have submitted bids, many of them in consortiums. There will be one company, or one consortium that would eventually be chosen by TRA to provide mobile TV broadcasting services for the licensed telecom operators and major clients," a source close to the developments told Gulf News.

"The TRA will study and evaluate the submitted proposals to assess if they were in line with the requirements of the invitation. We expect the outcome to be before the end of next March," Mohammad Al Ghanim, TRA's director-general, said in a statement.

"The applicants were not limited to companies having telecom licenses," he said, adding any entity fulfilling the criteria set out by TRA was welcomed to put in a proposal.

A TRA spokesman wouldn't say how many submissions were received from interested companies for acquiring the broadcast Mobile TV service licence.

The new Mobile TV service is provided through a different technology than the 3G streaming already available. It will offer a wider selection of channels at better quality.

According to a TRA document, the licence will be valid for 10 years. The licensee will pay TRA a licence acquisition fee of Dh20 million.

The licencee must also pay an annual licence fee of one per cent of revenues earned during the previous financial year or Dh100,000, whichever is higher.
