Muscat: Nawras, Oman's second communications service provider, will launch its fixed services in the second half of 2010, according to a press release Tuesday.

"We are looking forward to delighting our customers with our fixed services including fast Nawras broadband for homes and offices," announced Tore Solberg, Nawras Chief Commercial Officer.

"There are many customers waiting to be served with reliable technology and we will be ready to deliver this very soon," he added.

Nawras is in the process of implementing its next generation network across the country with around 10km of fibre optic cable going into the ground each day.

This massive project has already seen more than 1,500km of cable safely installed with the work continuing ahead of target.

At the same time, Nawras is building WiMax base stations to take its high speed broadband service into homes and residences nationwide. Fixed broadband services are expected to embrace more than 54 per cent of the population at launch and the company will increase that number to 81 per cent by the middle of next year.

"For the last five years we have reliably delivered services based on our high quality mobile network and now we will do the same with our fibre optic cable backbone and WiMax technology powering our pleasingly different fixed services," explained Peter Rubeck, Chief Technical Officer.

Nawras will be laying down more than 5,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables in total.

Even with this extensive coverage, the company will still have the incredible advantage of being able to identify the location of any minor malfunction with pinpoint accuracy to within just one metre of the source.

This will be possible thanks to the sophisticated monitoring system being put in place.

Currently, only Omantel provides fixed telephone service and broadband internet connections in the country.
