Dubai: Etisalat will commercially launch the fastest 300Mbps home broadband speeds over fibre optics next week, said a top official.

“We have rolled out the 300 Mbps fibre-optic broadband connection, but only for very very important persons [VVIPs],” Rashed Majed Al Abbar, Vice-President of Home Products Marketing for Etisalat, told Gulf News.

It is priced at Dh2,999 per month for double or triple play (landline, TV and internet).

He said the UAE has overtaken South Korea as the leader in fibre-to-the home (FTTH) network. We have around 500,000 homes connected to fibre optics network.

The UAE was ranked fourth behind Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong in the 2011 ranking.

According to Informa Telecoms and Media’s World Broadband Information Service’s latest report, UAE had 277,000 internet protocol television (IPTV) customers and 496,000 Direct-to-Home (DTH) customers as of second quarter this year.
