Dubai: Etisalat, the UAE's largest telecommunications company, says it is "trying to contact Apple in a bid to clarify the situation" regarding free video calls on the new iPhone 4.

The device, which went on sale in the UAE on Saturday, currently does not feature the popular FaceTime application, which is available to iPhone 4 users in other countries.

Khalifa Al Shamsi, Senior Vice President of Marketing at etisalat, said the company did not block any of the iPhone 4's services.

He pointed out that applications such as FaceTime, which allows users to make videocalls to other iPhone users only by using a Wi-Fi network, is a matter that involves the manufacturer.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Al Bawardi, secretary general at Abu Dhabi's executive council, said that the UAE is "very optimistic" about reaching an agreement in a dispute with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion.

"We both are working very hard trying to resolve the issues... it's going to be solved before the deadline," he said.
