Dubai: BlackBerry services are now compliant with the UAE's regulatory framework and will not be suspended on October 11, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said Friday.

"All BlackBerry services in the UAE will continue to operate as normal and no suspension of service will occur on October 11, 2010," it said in a statement.

TRA said that it reached the decision after "positive engagement and collaboration" with the manufacturer of the smartphone, Research In Motion (RIM), without revealing details of the agreement.

Data servers

A security expert based in Dubai said on condition of anonymity that resolution of the dispute "most likely" followed an agreement to place data servers within the UAE, allowing local authorities to access information.

"The whole point of placing servers in the country is that legal interception is done locally by police, CID or state security, if they want to access data of specific individuals," he said.

He said that technology provides a "slight window of opportunity" to get access to data locally before it moves to RIM's servers in Canada.

Lindsey McDonald, a telecom consultant at Frost & Sullivan, told Gulf News: "The situation follows from Saudi Arabia and India [reaching agreements with RIM], either through local servers or access to international servers.

"Concerns have been raised about privacy issues. I don't think that's the case. It's just another medium that government departments feel the need to monitor as part of an overall strategy for security reasons," she said.

The suspension deadline was announced more than two months ago.

This is funny. How come RIM becomes compliant only moments before the deadline whereas nothing was achievable in 2 years. Is this a gimmick to push iphone 4 sales ? Is this a gimmick by RIM to get its sales and stocks up in competition to Apple just by proving that they can be compliant in more stringent regions.

We are very happy to hear this news. Trust me without Blackberry our business would have been in a great trouble because there is solution or phone to match BB. Since I work for an international company BB has been a great support for our business.. As an organisation we thank our service provider (Etisalat),TRA, and RIM to solve the problem. We are looking forward for a smooth services as before in future also. Thanks Anil

Just as I expected..All of this was just a sales gimmick to sell Iphones. they do this whenever microsoft releases a new version qouting piracy..now they do it for phones as well. And there is little anyone can do about all this..and thats the saddest part....

I agree with the comments from "Mr. Very Shady"...Something very funny is going on here that we are not aware of. People need to understand that Blackberry, its architecture and platform are unlike anything else out there and is purely business focused/friendly. As a business shareholder, I lost lot of money both for hardware and software integration. Personally as well the transition has cost time, money and profit margins. We need more transparency and better regulations for consumer rights protection. Good luck everyone.

Well.. I was actually expecting this things to happen, Saudi is continously having the service, if Saudi made it, there is no reason that UAE can't made it. Thanks DU and Thanks BB..

BlackBerry services will continue beyond October 11- TRA This is what worries me,they said it will continue BEYOND October 11th but doesn't necessarily mean that this is permanent.Suppose they change their mind and cancel in mid October or next month?

I DO NOT THINK THAT THIS ISUUSE IS CONSIDERED TO BE A BIG DEAL SINCE WE ALL WELL AWARE THAT THIS WOULD HAVE EFFECTED NEGATIVELY ETISALAT BUSINESS AND IF THEY HAD DISCONNECTED THEIR BLACKBERRY SERVICE THEY WOULD HAVE LOST BILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND THEY WILL ALSO LOOSE THEIR BUSINESS AND THEIR CLIENTS AS WELL AS TOURISM TOO . SO WHY ARE YOU MAKING A BIG ISSUE OUT OF IT , WE KNEW THAT ALREADY
