The Russian shipping industry sees Dubai as a cost effective crew training hub for global shipping lines from the Middle East and North Africa region.

Representatives of Russian companies who will take part in the Ship and Port Arabia 2005 exhibition next month at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre, said that many shipping companies are now opting to train their crew within the region as part of streamlining costs.

"The focus on Dubai as a crew training hub signifies the increasing importance of the emirate as the focal point in the regional shipping industry. Once Dubai Maritime City is completely operational, this trend will continue to pick up," said Andrey Ilyin, managing director of Transas Middle East.

"Many shipowners who used to prefer sending their crews for training to the Far East and Europe are realising that it is not a cost-effective way of upgrading skills since Dubai is making such facilities available right at the doorstep of their operations," he added.

Transas, which has a regional Dubai base, is a global supplier of a wide range of software, integrated solutions and hardware technologies for the aviation and marine transportation industries, including on-board and shore-based applications.
