Doha: Singapore-based Keppel FELS Limited will deliver its first jack-up drilling rig for Qatar's national drilling company ahead of time, Gulf Drilling International Ltd (GDI), local papers have reported.

Dubbed Al Khor, the rig has been built to GDI's specifications for operations in water depths of up to 300 feet and drilling depth of down to 30,000 feet, the Gulf Times said.

The rig can accommodate up to 110 men and is readily upgradeable for higher drilling capabilities in water depths of up to 400 feet. When delivered, it will contribute to the development of Qatar's Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry, as the state strives towards being the world's largest exporter of LNG by 2012.

Mohammad Al Shirrawi, GDI chairman, said, although GDI is currently trying to consolidate its position within Qatar, it is also in the process of identifying suitable business opportunities within the region and trying to position itself to become a regional force in the drilling services industry in the near future.

GDI chief executive officer Yousif Al Khater said the company has managed, in a short period of time from its establishment in May 2004, to grow rapidly and in steady steps.

"With the latest rig, our fleet strength rises to eight. We now have a staff strength of about 800 from all around the world. GDI ambition does not stop here. Next year we expect another new offshore jack up rig to join our fleet. This rig is being built in this yard, by Keppel," Al Khater said.
