Abu Dhabi: The UAE's first locally built buses rolled off the production line at an Abu Dhabi factory last week, signalling a major advance in the country's industrial capability.

The first 10 air-conditioned coaches was shipped to Oman and the second batch of 20 coaches for Qatar will be ready next week, said Vinay V. Kulkarni, director of Plant Operations at Trans Continental Industries LLC.

The company is a 51:49 joint venture between the local Bin Jabr Group and UK-based Vectra Aza, the technology provider.

"The first roll-out of buses is a big step forward for the UAE which is know more for its trading. It is also a big boost to the local manufacturing industry and the country's branding into a local manufacturing centre," said Fuad E. Tannous, Managing Director of the Bin Jabr Group.

"Our Omani customers, Petroleum Development Oman, took delivery of the first buses manufactured at our factory. More buses will be rolled out and delivered to clients in the coming months," Kulkarni told Gulf News.
