Cargo traffic in Oman ports increases 15%
The volume of cargo handled at Mina Sultan Qaboos and Salalah ports stood at 3.9066 million tonnes in the first 10 months of 2005, compared to 3.3936 tonnes in the corresponding period of 2004, an increase of 15.1 per cent.
Muscat: The volume of cargo handled at Mina Sultan Qaboos and Salalah ports stood at 3.9066 million tonnes in the first 10 months of 2005, compared to 3.3936 tonnes in the corresponding period of 2004, an increase of 15.1 per cent.
According to a statistical bulletin released by the Ministry of National Economy the volume of goods handled at Mina Sultan Qaboos increased by 11.5 per cent to 2.4319 million tonnes against 2.1805 million tonnes during the same period last year.
Goods handled at Salalah Port rose by 21.6 per cent to 1.4757 million tonnes at the end of October 2005 compared with 1.2131 million tonnes during the same period in 2004.
Foodstuff, building and construction materials and vehicles were among the leading categories of cargo handled at the two ports.
The bulletin noted that a total of 2,067 ships called at the two ports during the first 10 months of 2005, down by 0.4 per cent from 2004. The figure stood at 2,076 vessels in the same period in 2004.
Until end-October 2005, 1,570 vessels visited Mina Sultan Qaboos, a rise of 0.3 per cent over the 1,566 vessels that called during the same period a year ago.
The number of vessels which called at Salalah port fell by 2.5 per cent to 497 ships by the end of October 2005, compared with 510 ships in 2004, the bulletin stated.
