Dubai: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of the UAE (TRA) has announced the completion of its smart transformation process of the authority’s frequency spectrum (radio) services, as part of its strategy to enhance smart transformation in the UAE.

Customers can now receive frequency spectrum services from their location, without the need to visit the TRA or its service centres.

TRA is the body responsible for managing and regulating the radio spectrum for all radio services in the UAE.

Saleh Al Masabi, Director of Spectrum Services at TRA, told Gulf News that as per the UAE Telecom Law, no equipment should be used or imported into the country without the approval of the TRA.

All electronic equipment needs radio spectrum (or frequency) to communicate.

So, in order to get a licence from the TRA for the equipment, he said that a customer needs to fill a service form and this could be for a yacht or ship, aircraft or walkie-talkie.

“Before, a customer needs to come to the TRA’s office and submit the form. Now, all the services can be submitted online without coming to the TRA office and without any signature,” he said.

Knowledge-based society

Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, TRA Director-General, said that TRA is in the process of completing smart transformation of all services and sectors, in order to provide the highest level of services to the customers and support the efforts of digital government and smart city at a national level, to achieve the UAE Vision 2021.

He said that the success and progress of the smart transformation of the ICT sector facilitate the smart transformation of other sectors and services, as the telecommunications sector is the key to development in a knowledge-based society and economy.

“We are currently working to enhance interconnection internally and with various entities, which would strengthen integration to achieve the strategic directions of our beloved country, particularly in global leadership,” he said.
