Abu Dhabi: The head of Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (du) said there will be “no financial impact at all” on the company after an internet cable off the coast of Egypt suffered multiple cuts on Saturday.

Othman Sultan, chief executive officer at du, said on Tuesday that the company has some capacity buffers as its customers’ usage was less than its actual capacity.

“The technical team is still following up on it. There will be no financial impact because [the cuts] never exceeded our current capacity. We don’t look at the cause; there are other companies and their role is to look at the cause. We look at the consequence, we mitigate the consequence, and we check how the repairing is taking place. Customers are not impacted,” the CEO said.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the 10th GCC Regulators Summit, which was taking place in Abu Dhabi.

On Sunday, du issued a statement saying that work was underway to repair the affected systems, and that the company was “in constant touch with the submarine cable system providers.”

“We have proactively taken all measures to re-route traffic through alternate cable systems to minimise impact. Some of our customers, however, may temporarily experience slowness in broadband speeds during peak times,” the statement said.
