Doha: Cargo volumes in the third quarter at Dubai World Central (DWC), the city’s new airport in Jebel Ali that is only open to freight, more than doubled to 58,423 tons, from 26,570 tons in the same period a year ago, as traffic increased.

Dubai Airports, which manages both Dubai’s airports, said in a statement that year-to-date freight was also strongly up on 2011, with the introduction late last year of more scheduled and charter flights.

DWC currently has 36 carriers operating while negotiations with a number of others are ongoing, it said.

Passenger operations at DWC, a key project at the heart of Dubai’s ambitions to become a global aviation hub, could start in 2013. The airport, based near Jebel Ali, opened for cargo operations in 2010.
