Dubai: Abu Dhabi Ports, the manager of ports in the emirate, forecast on Wednesday a lower growth in cargo volumes across the nine ports it manages for 2015 than the previous year.

Cargo growth in Abu Dhabi is expected to increase by 17 per cent this year, compared to 37 per cent in 2014, the ports manager said in a statement. The nine ports handled 12,821,584 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a shipping container measurement.

“As many development projects in Abu Dhabi are underway, we look ahead to a promising 2015 with healthy growth figures,” stated Abu Dhabi Ports Chief Executive, Mohammad Juma Al Shamsi.

Abu Dhabi Ports’ flagship is Khalifa Port in the emirate’s north towards the Dubai border. The port handled more than 1.1 million TEUs in 2014, up 26 per cent on the previous year.

Phase One of Khalifa Port has a capacity of 2.5 million TEUs and 12 million tonnes of general cargo. The port will be eventually be able to handle 15 million TEUs and 35 million tonnes of general cargo per year, according to Abu Dhabi Ports.

Abu Dhabi Ports also manages Zayed Port, Musaffah Port, Western Rgion Ports and Shahama Port.
