Abu Dhabi: Fertil, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and Total, has signed a $1.2-billion (Dh4.4 billion) contract with Samsung Engineering to construct a fertiliser complex in the Al Ruwais Industrial Zone to expand capacity.

The contract was signed on Monday during a ceremony attended by Rashid Saud Al Shamsi, Fertil board chairman and Adnoc Petrochemicals director, Fertil board of directors, Fertil management, Samsung and German Uhde representatives.

Chung Yong-chi, Ambassador of South Korea, was present at the ceremony.

The expansion project, Fertil-2, includes the construction of ammonia and urea plants at its fertiliser complex in Al Ruwais, about 250 kilometres west of Abu Dhabi.

Capacity

The project will help increase the fertiliser complex's production capacity from 0.65 million tonnes per year to two million tonnes. The project is slated for completion by early 2013.

The new single stream ammonia plant will have a capacity of 2,000 metric tonnes per day and the single stream urea plant 3,500 metric tonnes per day of granulated urea.

The capacity of the fertiliser complex will increase to 3,300 metric tonnes of ammonia and 5,800 of urea by the first quarter of 2013.

Synergies

"This significant investment at our fertiliser complex confirms our commitment to being an important player in the industry," says Fertil general manager Mohammad R. Al Rashid.

"We look forward to the synergies that these new plants will bring to our existing operations and to benefiting from the considerable experience of Samsung Engineering."

K.S. Park, President of Samsung Engineering, said: "We will demonstrate our project management and technical expertise, by executing the project safely and on schedule. We hope to maintain our long-term partnership with Fertil and Adnoc, and aim to be the contractor of choice for future projects as well."

The expansion is in pursuit of Fertil's vision to be the first choice company' producing environment-friendly industrial fertilisers.
