Dubai: The region's organic food market is estimated to reach $300 million (Dh1.1 billion) according to the organisers of the The Middle East Natural and Organic Product Expo (Menope).

The industry, though still very small compared to other countries in Europe is growing at an average rate of 20 per cent a year, according to the organisers. The organic products market in the region is at the threshold of growth and the current demand and sales volume is comparable to the European markets between 1985-1990.

Still growing

"Even at low volumes, the Middle East is still the fastest growing destination for natural and organic foods," said Eng Nadim Al Fuqaha, managing director at Global Links, organisers of Menope 2010.

The three-dayMenope, which ends today, is the region's only exhibition dedicated to the organic food industry. It is held under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and Water, Dubai Municipality and International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement, and attracts over 100 exhibitors. The event has seen a strong participation from the UAE, Italy, United States, United Kingdom, India, Germany, Belgium, China, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, among others.

Menope also hosted a two-day Congress where experts covered topics such as sustainable and vegetarian lifestyle for wholesome health, environmental protection, among others.
