Dubai: Jeep and Chrysler Middle East will recall 600 Jeep models from 2008 to repair potential defects in their gearboxes.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Economy's Department of Consumer Protection, Chrysler Group International has announced a free service check for 2008 Jeep Wrangler (automatic transmission) owners.

The service check seeks to test the automatic transmission fluid which in some of the vehicles may overheat under extreme driving conditions, causing the fluid to boil over, according to a safety recall statement issued by Jeep and Chrysler Middle East.

"Although a very limited number of 2008 Jeep Wranglers [automatic transmission] may be affected, Chrysler International, to ensure the safety of its customers, will inspect all 2008 Jeep Wranglers [automatic transmission] and carry out any necessary rectification work completely free of charge," the statement said.

This service check will be carried out by authorised Jeep agents in the UAE. Outlets include Western Motors (Abu Dhabi and Al Ain) and Trading Enterprises (Dubai and Northern Emirates).

According to the statement if there is a defect, the work which involves a minor re-programming of the relevant module should take a maximum of an hour to complete. No parts are required to be replaced.

Vehicle recalls worldwide

Chrysler is not the first to issue a recall for faulty vehicles.

Nissan on Wednesday announced the recall of 540,000 faulty vehicles, while Toyota is facing more questions from the US Congress over its troubled safety record after a worldwide recall of more than 8.5 million faulty vehicles.

Honda has also announced a recall of 646,000 Fit hatchbacks worldwide because of a glitch that could cause water to enter the power window mechanism.

South Korean car maker Hyundai also announced that it is recalling 47,000 of its new Sonata sedans to fix faulty door latches.
