Abu Dhabi: Some 1,094 absconding housemaids were caught in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Sharjah during the first four months of this year.

The consecutive violators follow-up inspection teams from the Ministry of Interior caught the housemaids during the first quarter of this year as part of ongoing campaigns across the country.

Major General Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali, Deputy Assistant of Naturalisation, Residency and Boarder Checkpoints Department, said the campaigns will continue to pursue absconding housemaids, violators and infiltrators, in addition to whoever accommodates them, and refer them to the law.

Major General Al Menhali added that the Ministry of Interior is currently coordinating with the embassies and consulates of the maids in the UAE to facilitate their return to their countries.

He also pointed out that the embassies and consulates are cooperating with the ministry to complete travel procedures as soon as possible.

Colonel Saeed Bin Rakan Al Rashidi, Director of the violators follow-up section, said inspection teams were able to arrest 582 absconding maids in Abu Dhabi, 242 in Al Ain and 270 in Sharjah.

He also pointed out that this number of absconding maids caught during this period is an indicator that the servant absconding problem is still there and the inspection teams will continue their work to pursue them.

Colonel Al Rashidi said there are reasons that encourage servants to abscond, one of which is brokers that trade the safety and interest of the country for cheap material returns accommodate them thus violating laws and regulations in this respect.

Authorities have increased the fine for accommodating and employing violators to Dh50,000, and the fine for helping infiltrators is Dh100,000 with a prison sentence and deportation.

Report infiltrators and violators

UAE nationals and expatriate citizens are encouraged to call the toll free number 80080 which functions 24 hours a day to report infiltrators and violators.

Would you report an absconder to the authorities? Why or why not?

the law of the country should be followed but also the govt shuold find out the reason why have these maids absconded is it because of the individual sponsors who got them here or the company which hired these maids because for sure not everyone comes here to be called an absconder and get punished but they come here to earn a desent salary the sponsors of these maids should be equally responsible

That maids abscond is not really news. Why they chose to leave their employers is more of a news story. Abuse, Mistreatment, failure to pay salary, lousy living conditions, imprisonment, could all be on the list of reasons why some people abscond. These people need a way to control their own destiny instead of having employers force them into these decisions. Of course, some of them are bad but I would like to see these people surveyed about their reasons for absconding. THAT would be news.

The law of the country states that an employee has to work for the sponsor. This must be followed. On one hand we have absconding maids, then there is the issue of male absconders doing the same (cleaning) and washing cars. This is definitely a threat to law and order and security of law abiding people both Emiratis and expats living in this country. How can the authorities tackle illegal residents if people dont support the authorities in reporting such cases? All residents can be safe and protected only when illegals are tackled as per law.

the govt. should find out the reasons why housemaids absconds, is it because they are maltreated and deprived from thier human rights? I heard and noticed so many sad stories about housemaids , how they are maltreated by their employer and i think arresting them wouldnt stop the problem...

I do not believe that an alarming number of maids will abscond if their employers treat them humanely and decently. "Love begets love".

    1) Housemaid has a valid visa and sponsor has no objection to his working elsewhere. then what do immigration authorities require to make his working valid?2) In case, three families wish to share the cost of sponsoring a maid, is this still an issue with immigration?3) Official Maid Services do not render services beyond office times, what solution does immigration offer for working ladies who cannot afford full time sponsors.
