Dubai: German carmaker Daimler's luxury car brand Mercedes-Benz Tuesday said its October sales in the Middle East and Levant showed a significant increase.

Total sales were up — compared to the same month last year — 15 per cent in Dubai and 19 per cent in Abu Dhabi. In Saudi Arabia, sales grew 20 per cent and in Kuwait by 13 per cent.

However, the company does not break down the figures on single markets, a spokesperson told Gulf News, when asked for details on UAE sales.

The company pointed out that its SUV models performed quite well during the period.

Third quarter sales of the ML and GL Grand editions were up 74 per cent, it said.

The E-Class, S-Class and C-Class models also contributed positively to the October results, with the E-Class strengthening its leadership position in the luxury full-size sedan segment with a 17 per cent increase this year over the prior year, the carmaker said.

"This is an extremely positive result for the ML and GL Grand Editions which we had anticipated would help drive our market share within the SUV segment... the E-Class continues to dominate and has become a key performer across the region," said Frank Bernthaler, director of sales and marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars, Middle East and Levant.

Price range

The price range of the ML and GL Grand Editions ranges from Dh215,000 and Dh299,000.

Globally, Mercedes-Benz increased sales in October by 13.6 per cent to 100,500 vehicles, marking the 12th straight month of double-digit growth in volumes.

While China remained the single fastest-growing market for the brand, with a surge in sales of 119 per cent, Daimler said sales gained disproportionately faster in its much larger domestic market than in the rest of the world.

"Our success in Germany played a major role in this development.

"We attained a market share of 11.1 per cent here, representing the highest level since October 2008," Mercedes sales chief Joachim Schmidt said in a statement.

In the third quarter, the company recorded a 23 per cent increase globally, compared to the same period last year, with 475,110 vehicles sold.
