Abu Dhabi The winner of the Dh5.5 million ($1.5 million) Zayed Future Energy Prize (ZFEP) will be announced on Tuesday evening at a grand ceremony, organisers have said.

The prize, awarded to finders of innovative energy solutions from across the globe, is named after the UAE's founder Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

ZFEP will go to individuals, companies, governments, organisations and NGOs that have made significant contributions to the global response to the future of energy, and climate change in areas such as renewable and sustainable energy sources, efficient use of non-renewable energies, conservation, energy policy, communications and public awareness.

Two finalists will also receive $350,000 each to further their ideas and efforts.

Launched in 2008 with the aim of inspiring the next generation of global energy innovators to create future energy solutions, ZFEP was first awarded last year.

Dipal Barua, founding managing director of Grameen Shakti, became the first winner of the Zayed Future Energy Prize.

General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, presented the prestigious prize to him for his visionary efforts to bring renewable energy solutions to the rural population of Bangladesh.
