Dubai: The UAE has launch-ed the first phase of an extensive survey on employment, salaries and working hours.

Announcing the launch, Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, said the decision was part of the Federal Government's strategy to develop a national statistical system.

This will aid the policy- and decision-making process by providing data that complies with international standards and reflects the economic growth of the UAE, Al Mansouri said. Al Mansouri said the survey will be conducted periodically by the authorities according to international recommendations. The key objectives of the survey are to identify the number of institutions per sector and economic activity and to identify the workforce volume per gender, nationality and educational qualification.

The survey will also evaluate salaries paid according to professional groups and gender, and identify the number of paid working hours as per professional groups, sectors, gender and employment numbers.

The survey is being undertaken in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Statistics Centre and Dubai Statistics Centre, signalling the importance of cooperation and coordination between federal and local entities to build the modern statistical system.

Next phase

The minister invited all concerned organisations to cooperate with the researchers by providing them with necessary data.

Rashid Khamees Al Suwaidi, Assistant UnderSecretary for Planning and Statistics, said the survey samples will be representative of all businesses and institutions in the UAE. The survey will be conducted taking into consideration the size of the business in terms of workforce and economic activities undertaken.

He said the preparation phase has started in the first quarter of the year, whereby the organisational framework has been updated.

The next phase includes reviewing data and classifying it statistically, scheduling it, extracting primary results and preparing the scientific material and statistical information for publishing.
