Abu Dhabi: The British ambassador to the UAE said on Sunday that they are working hard with their partners to control Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (Isil), which has unleashed terror in the region by murdering hundreds of people, including two American journalists and a British aid worker, in recent times.

“I think everybody recognises clearly the need to tackle this threat and to help to protect the people who are threatened by this barbarous activity,” said Philip Parham, the British ambassador to the UAE on the sidelines of an event hosted for a British business delegation in Abu Dhabi.

“As our prime minister has made clear, there are many ways this challenge has to be tackled, in terms of diplomacy, financing, politics, security. There are many different avenues and aspects we need to use to control Isil.”

He said that the government of the UAE is a key partner. “There is no question that the government of the UAE is a key partner in tackling this problem and our prime minister had been clear about it.”

“We welcome willingness and all clear statements of opposition to the kind of violence and extremism represented by Isil. Over the coming days and weeks, I think we and our partners will be working together to find the best way to tackle it.”

A coalition of ten Arab states, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia, supported the US’s pledge to destroy Isil at a meeting held in Jeddah last week.
