Abu Dhabi: The Regulation and Supervision Bureau, the emirate’s independent regulatory body for the water, wastewater and electricity sector, issued new guidelines to regulate the sector and ensure the safe collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater products.

The new rules came after three years of consultations, said Nicholas Carter, Director general of the bureau.

Carter said the new guidelines are one of the most important rules issued by the bureau since its establishment.

The new rules are divided into two main sections, the first of which is about the regulation of industrial waste water which aim at regulating the disposal of wastewater resulting from industrial activities.

Earlier, there were no official regulations concerning the safe collection and disposal of wastewater by companies undertaking activities related to electricity and water production, transmission, distribution and supply. This led to the emergence of some dangers on the wastewater treatment network and environment.

The second section of the new guidelines is related to the recycling of wastewater and solid waste.

As per the new rules, companies operating in this field, including Abu Dhabi Wastewater Service Company, Higher Corporation for Specialized Economic Zones, are authorized to ask companies involving in electricity and water-related activities to obtain approval before disposal of wastewater.

The bureau will coordinate with authorities concerned to ensure the compliance with the new regulations and rules.

The bureau has the exclusive authority to regulate all companies undertaking activities associated with electricity and water production, transmission, distribution and supply.
