Ministry to identify industrial problems

Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Economy and Industrial Affairs is seeking to identify the problems being faced by industries nationwide, according to Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy.
"There is an obvious inconsistency when we compare the industrial sectors of the different emirates, while sensitive issues arise, as each emirate claims its course to be the best," Al Mansouri told Gulf News yesterday. "What we seek is to identify the problems facing the development of the sector at the national level, as we find countries such as Saudi Arabia already providing better support for their industries," he said.
The minister visited some of the major industrial establishments at the first phase of the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD1), including Emirates Steel Industries, Al Jaber Group, Abu Dhabi National Industrial Projects (ADNIP), and Al Nasser Industrial Enterprises.
Major industries in Abu Dhabi revealed their concerns to the minister yesterday and they included issues of land registration, licensing, utilities, standards, testing and customs.
"We cannot understand why there are still custom fees on scrap iron, despite a decision taken three years ago to exempt it from duties," commented Sanjay Mehta, chief executive officer (CEO) of Al Nasser. "There is no consistency between the decisions taken at the federal level and their implementation."
"Some industries find it easier to export their products, while facing difficulties in the local market, and that is an issue that we need to correct by supporting them in the domestic market for the first three years," Al Mansouri said.
