Tokyo / New York:  Group of Seven finance ministers held a telephone conference yesterday on the Greek debt crisis, Japan's Finance Minister Naoto Kan said.

"We heard a report on efforts in Europe to stabilise the euro," Kan told reporters at his ministry.

He said "various" issues were discussed, but did not go into detail.

US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner also participated, a Treasury spokesperson said. Asked whether the call was held to discuss the Greek debt crisis and financial market situation, the spokesperson provided no further detail about the call other than Geithner's participation.

Geithner's participation comes two days after he phoned Britain's new Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, to congratulate him on his new role in the coalition government formed by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron.

Geithner told Osborne that he "looked forward to working with him on economic issues of importance to both countries, Europe and the world".

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development meanwhile warned yesterday that the Greek crisis could harm recovery in eastern Europe, hit by the worst economic turmoil since the fall of communism.
