Dubai: Shopping festival Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) will kick off on June 17 and is expected to showcase some of the best deals in its 13 years of existence as the inflation rate continues to remain low.

The Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE), an agency under the Department of Economic Development, Wednesday said it has drawn up an extensive plan to present activities focused on shopping, family entertainment, winning, and lifestyle during the 52 days of the extravaganza, which ends on August 7.

DEPE Chief Executive Laila Suhail said in a statement: "DSS marks its 13th edition this year and comes after more than a decade of welcoming and entertaining millions of visitors from across the world. The event has come a long way towards positioning Dubai as a leading summer destination, and every year the vital economic sectors in Dubai reap the fruits of DSS in the form of enhanced businesses."

Laila also said that the DEPE team was "fully geared" for the Arabian Travel Market that takes place from May 4 to 7. Participating under the umbrella of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, DEPE will promote DSS through its stand UAE2300 and unveil some of the elements of DSS 2010.

Starting off in 1998, DSS is synonymous with a range of indoor and outdoor summer activities combined with some of the best shopping deals in the region. Additionally, Modhesh World, the largest indoor edutainment venue in the Middle East, returns this year with a focus on providing entertainment not just for children, but various age groups and tastes. The indoor venue attracted 500,000 visitors in DSS 2009.

Setting aside doubts on the impact of the recession on tourist arrivals, Laila said regional and international visitors would find DSS extremely affordable, with hotels, airlines, government and private sector parties coming together to offer travel, accommodation and lifestyle packages.

She pointed out that the continuing low rate of inflation made it possible for some of the best deals in the region to be offered.
