Dubai The total value of counterfeit goods seized by Dubai Customs in 2011 reached Dh40 million in 501 cases, a top customs official said at the World Intellectual Property Day said Thursday.

Ahmad Butti Ahmad, executive chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation and director general of Dubai Customs, said compared to the 2010 result the number was shrinking as the value of fake goods was Dh31 million in 689 cases.

"According to Dubai Customs' first quarter results of 2012, the efforts made to combat counterfeit and piracy could remarkably reduce the number of counterfeit seized cases from 150 with a value of Dh20 million in 2011 to 90 in 2012 with a value of Dh3 million.

"Dubai Customs strongly believes in protecting the rights of producers and brand owners," he added.
