Dubai: The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) on Tuesday said that it is seeking advisory services on privatisation in the power generation and desalination projects.
Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of Dewa, said Dubai's competitiveness in the power and water desalination business is stable and the city should should support private competition in the sector.
Dewa has opted to study this area through a specialist consultant and study the possibility of implementing a project for electricity generation and water desalination with the participation of the private sector.
Al Tayer said, "Dewa aims to encourage the private sector to engage in such strategic projects and to establish a business model that depends on the competitiveness and the latest technology available to provide for Dubai's energy needs taking environmental considerations into account."
Strict legislation
He added that strict legislation related to technical specifications, reliability, pricing and regulations relating to emissions, as well as predictable market and economic changes in the future play a important role in Dewa's decision-making process.
Al Tayer said that Dewa will continue to complete projects related to production of electricity and water as the introduction of an Independent Producer of Water and Power Producer (IWPP) requires some time for implementation.
Dewa is an integrated utility provider, serving nearly 600,000 customers. It presently has assets generating 7,000 megawatts of power and 330 million imperial gallons per day of desalinated water, with an associated power and water transmission and distribution network.
