The new 3G phone that was first announced last April is less than two inches wide and weighs just 93 grams
Dubai: Despite the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority's (TRA) recent announcement that it will suspend BlackBerry services in the UAE as of October 11, the launch of the new BlackBerry Pearl 9100 in this market will still be held, according to one of the organisers of the event.
It is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
Smallest BlackBerry
The new 3G phone that was first announced last April is less than two inches wide and weighs just 93 grams.
Research in Motion (RIM), the makers of the BlackBerry, said that the Pearl 3G is the smallest BlackBerry smartphone yet.
One thing's for sure: if the new BlackBerry Pearl 3G is going to sell, it won't be for its services which include the BlackBerry email, messaging and social networking.
Drop in sales
Following the decision to ban the service, retailers expect sales of BlackBerry phones to drop.
"We just started a BlackBerry promotion today [yesterday] so we're worried that sales will drop as we've just bought a lot of stock," Shankar Iyer, general manger of Emax, told Gulf News.
"We will not stock the new BlackBerry Pear 3G until the issue is resolved."
"It's not a failed event," the organiser told Gulf News. "It's strictly a media event."
