Dubai: The fourth and last phase of the push to award Arabic-language domain names will open to all parties on November 13, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has announced.

Initiated by the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the US-based body that oversees the internet, the new .emarat domain is designed to open up to the web to languages other than those with Latin scripts.

Mohammad Nasser Al Ganem, TRA dir-ector general, noted: "We are pleased to announce our approval for the launch of the fourth and last phase of the registration in the Arabic domain name .emarat.

"We hope that this phase will be a starting point for a new era in the internet world. In this regard, the TRA is very keen to meet the requests of all companies and entities willing to join this service. Our aim is to serve all customers adhering to best practices and methods."

Turning point

"We would like to stress again the great importance of this phase, as it represents a turning point in supporting the usage and the spread of the Arabic language on a wide level.

"This, of course, will grant us the opportunity to empower our leading position in the region and the whole world, as we contribute to spreading the Arabic language on all levels, and serving those who speak it," Al Ganem said in a statement.
