Abu Dhabi: There is no intention to increase the prices of water and electricity in 2013 in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, said Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) on Monday in a press conference.

“We have no intention to increase the prices of water and electricity this year,” stressed Ahmad Al Za’abi, ADDC’s Customer Service Director.

Al Za’abi added that the number of ADDC’s subscribers is over 400,000 who benefit from the services extended in various areas of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

In Abu Dhabi, consumers do not pay more than 15 fils per kilowatt-hour for electricity at present and the direct subsidy paid by the government represents between 40-85 per cent of the true cost, according to Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA).

According to energy experts, any future hike in prices of electricity and water aim to conserve the emirate’s resources to be a sustainable global city.

The Abu Dhabi’s Regulation and Supervision Bureau announced last June plans to experiment time-of-day pricing with a select group of volunteer households to raise awareness of the cost, covered by the government, and on the benefits of saving.

Abu Dhabi Statistics Centre has announced recently that the total electricity consumption in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi increased by 10 per cent to 43,250 gigawatt per hour last year with Abu Dhabi region accounting for 64 per cent of total consumption, Al Ain and Al Gharbia consumed 24 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.

The centre revealed that the domestic sector accounted for the largest share (30.7 per cent) of total electricity consumption.
