Dubai Toyota has started recalling 13,380 Toyota Fortuner models made between 2006 and 2008 to repair a rear-wheel drive issue, company's UAE dealer told Gulf News.

"We have begun a service campaign on 4,109 Fortuner vehicles in the UAE. Toyota Motor Corporation has informed us that in some of these vehicles the rear propeller shaft installation will require inspection and may require minor adjustment to ensure optimal performance," Simon Frith, Managing Director of Al Futtaim Motors, said in an emailed statement.

He said, "We have begun contacting our customers directly for an appointment at our service centres in the interests of delivering the highest standards of Toyota product quality and customer care."

Bill Carter, head of operations and research at Autodata Middle East, told Gulf News that the issue is minor and is not safety-related. It is part of a routine maintenance operation.

'Routine checks'

"These types of routine checks are done in other parts of the world, especially in Europe and North America," he said.

Frith said the approximate repair time is one hour, required to adjust the propeller shaft's position for optimal performance. "This is a global service campaign with around 13,380 vehicles involved in the overseas markets, of which 4,109 vehicles are in the UAE market," Frith said.

Al Futtaim expects to complete initial calls for all customers within the next two weeks. "We have started informing customers from Sunday," he said.
