Dubai India's Tata Nanos will soon roll into neighbouring Bangladesh with its sole distributor saying the first consignment of the vehicles is set to arrive by next month.

"Fortunately Nano has been made for the middle income people who want to have a car at a reasonable price [and] I think Bangladesh is the most suitable country for the Nano vehicles," the chairman of Tata's sole distributor Tata Niloy Group Matlub Ahmad said. Ahmad said that unlike the two-seater ones, Tata Niloy would import the Nano family cars which can take four people and "I hope as soon as those arrive, Nano will be the most popular and fashionable car in Bangladesh".

Increased demand

Ahmad said Niloy group planned to initially import up to 2,000 cars, but the figure will be raised with increased demand. He said the rise in demand is expected to lead to the setting up of a Nano assembly plant in the next year and a half. Ahmad said the car was likely to cost around 500,000 taka (Dh22,377) in Bangladesh considering the existing customs duty and his company expected that 500 to 1,000 Nano cars could be sold per month because of their "low-price, smaller shape and reliability".

The Nano was scheduled to be launched in Bangladesh last October, but was delayed by pricing issues. A number of Nano cars can be seen on Dhaka streets ahead of their formal launch.
