Abu Dhabi: Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of Union Railway, today announced that Union Railway is in advanced stages of discussion and coordination with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to explore transporting, via the railway system, over seven million tons of granulated sulphur per annum from the Shah and Habshan oil and gas fields into Ruwais.

Commenting on the potential partnership, Al Nowais said, “We are very excited to have the opportunity to work with ADNOC. This important strategic initiative will fulfil several strategic objectives. Firstly, it will support ADNOC’s ongoing investment program in the Shah and Habshan oil and gas fields.

"It will also contribute to the development of the oil, gas and petrochemical industries in the country. Finally, it will help to accelerate the development of the Western Region, in line with Vision 2030. This section of the railway will be fast-tracked to meet ADNOC’s schedule and requirements.”

Union Railway was established in 2009 under Federal Law No. 2 with a mandate to manage the development, construction and operation of the UAE’s national railway.

The railway will be built to link the principal centers of population and industry of the UAE, and form a part of the planned GCC railway network.

The railway, which will be built to international standards of interoperability, will run at speeds of between 80 and 120 kilometers per hour for freight transport; and between 160 and 200 kilometers per hour for passenger transport.
