Abu Dhabi: Commuters have expressed disappointment over the delay in the start of an automated fare collection system in public buses.

The system, called Hafilat, was announced by the Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi last year. It was meant to enable passengers of public and intercity buses to buy and top up cards using cash or credit cards.

However, the machines put up across various bus stations and shopping malls, have yet to become operational.

“It’s been a while since they were installed. I don’t know how long I have to wait before I could use it,” said Indian sales agent Mohammad Anees.

Another resident, Kiran Kumar, said he is upset at the delay. “I was excited when I saw the machines. I hope they start soon and I am spared the hassle of standing in long queues to buy monthly commuting cards,” he said.

According to authorities, 300 machines will be installed at bus stations, customer-care centres, bus shelters, Abu Dhabi airport, malls and hospitals.
