Mumbai: An Air India ground staff worker was sucked into an aircraft engine at Mumbai Airport on Wednesday evening, official sources said.

The incident took place at bay number 28 at about 8.40pm as a flight was being prepared for departure.

The victim was sucked into the running engine of the aircraft, which was scheduled to depart at 8.44pm as Mumbai-Hyderabad flight AI-619. The flight was delayed by an hour.

The staff member's identity was yet to be established due to the severity of damage to the body.

Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani said he was deeply saddened and regretted the tragic incident.

"The incident is being investigated. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family," Lohani said.
